Liberté and Responsabilité #JeSuisCharlie

by Kazeem Olalekan

How many angels dancing on the head of a pin?

The debate about balancing liberty with responsibility is an important one but of little value because the balance is more or less different for each person akin to the forlorn task of determining how many angels are dancing on the pin head.  As individuals try to get the balance right for themselves and someone (or a group of people) comes along and re-calibrated the scale with such alacrity and incredulity, thereby making the scale swing precariously from one extreme to another with jangling nerves, I am more or less sure where I stand: #JeSuisCharlie.

Channels of Distribution #HopeYet

by Kazeem Olalekan

This month, I wish to use this blog to inform you that the channel of distribution for ‘The Doctrine of Universal Truths’ has increased considerably. Furthermore, I am also happy to enter into private discussion with charitable bodies who wish distribute the book via their channels and thus make a small amount for their charities. Also if any independent book sellers which to talk to me about selling the book, then I am open for discussion. In all cases, I hope the book will make a good read.

Are we going to create a new church? – Wale Olorunshola

The question above was not what I expected. It threw me off balance. All I could say in response was: ‘Is there not enough churches out there?‘ The above is the excerpt of my conversation with Wale, who I mentioned in the ‘doctrine of universal truths’ soon after my seminal moment. Whilst I couldn’t express what was happening to me to many of my other friends for fear of being labelled mad and condemned to the asylum; I felt Wale would understand. This assumption was based on the nature of our previous relationship in Nigeria. Here was someone I was asking to join me in the UK and all he could ask was ‘Are we going to create a new church?‘ He was probably joking but the question struck a chord. In any case, he didn’t join me and we are still great friends. Read the book to find out more.

Thank you: The magic word #gratitude

by Kazeem Olalekan

B’ọmọ bá dúpẹ́ óore àná, a tún rí òmíràn gbà – Yoruba Proverb

The above is a Yoruba proverb that roughly translates: If a child expresses gratitude for previous gift, he would receive another one. My son will soon be three years old and I see myself teaching him to say his pleases and thank yous (or Ps and Qs). This is not simply to satisfy my human need not to be taken for granted but to teach him something more profound and spiritual. My case study finding demonstrates unequivocally, in my mind, that magic happens when we say our Ps and Qs.

Lest We Forget: The Albatross #bigbird

by Kazeem Olalekan

The only albatross is the hurt you divine from what people say about your art. – Stephen Stills

In my November post last year, I made a comparison between the Law of Animalism and the Doctrine of Universal Truths. In that post, I listed the Animals in my book in the order of appearance. But alas, I forgot to mention the Albatross! The Albatross appeared after Eagle but before the Wolves. How could I have missed out the Albatross, which after all, is the metaphor for my financial woes. This post aims to redress that omission by discussing the reasons why we shouldn’t forget l’albatros.

Seeing is believing: An Oxymoron? #NewYearResolution

by Kazeem Olalekan

“Settle down Beavis. This is only gonna hurt for like a minute or something.” – Butthead

When someone says seeing is believing, you may think ‘That is odd, once you have seen, then you know…in which case, there is no need to believe’ If you think that, then you might consider the statement ‘seeing is believing’ an oxymoronBelieving means accepting something is true, especially without proof. If you think that, however, you will almost exactly be wrong. In actual fact, ‘seeing is believing‘ is a proverb. It is a sensible advice which effectively means that even when you see, the most you can do is believe…no more. It is unwise to extrapolate that on the evidence of seeing, you know. For the duration of this piece, I will like you to suspend your belief or disbelief.

The art of wonder #christmas

by Kazeem Olalekan

“The possession of knowledge does not kill the sense of wonder and mystery. There is always more mystery.”

― Anaïs Nin

At a time when Richard Dawkins is developing an appetite for wonder, I thought I might address the art of wonder in this post. I posted a riposte to Richard Dawkin’s Channel 4 documentary on God Delusion elsewhere, a few years back. We clearly approach the issue of God from different perspectives. In any case, we are both believers: I believe in God and he doesn’t. Whatever the perspective however, I think there is always room for wonder. This is a Richard Dawkins books, I will be investing in (along with Stephen Hawkings: ‘My brief history’). As you might know: ‘I play the man and the ball. I always keep my eye on the ball’.

Animals are my friends….and I don’t eat my friends

George Bernard Shaw

In George Orwell’s allegorical and dystopian novel: Animal Farm, the rebellious animals of Manor Farm (later Animal Farm, then Manor Farm again!), adopted seven commandments which were later updated as circumstances changed.  The table below were the commandments before and after Napoleon’s coup d’etat.

The green, green grass of home #Wales

by Kazeem Olalekan

Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted. – Albert Einstein

Howe is it that Wales, and its characteristic Welsh spirit, has come to dominate my ‘doctrine of Universal Truths’ journey? For its entire history, Wales has struggled against waves of invaders who have sought to subjugate its people; but, as the invaders found out, it’s a country that just won’t lie down (link). It is that ‘never say die’ attitude that eventually led to the writing of my book. There were key characters along the way that illuminated my path. In spite of what criticism there may be of the civil service, bureaucratic maneuvering is a factor in me being here today (even GOD – with a small g – defends bureaucracy).

The Language of Constant #mathematics

by Kazeem Olalekan

The ‘doctrine of universal truths’ eluded to the presence of a Constant in life. That Constant is God. This God resides in the ‘absolute’ centre not in a political centre. So politicians might claim to occupy the centre ground or might even claim to be able to shift the centre ground (to the right or to the left). All these are possible where a political centre is concerned. However, the centre where God resides is immutable. It follows therefore, that if God is not going to change, then we have to change, if we want to stay close to Him. You, however don’t have to. That is a choice we all have.
